Why diets aren’t healthy.
Most diets aren’t healthy. Restrictive dieting flies in the face of how our bodies and minds work. We were meant to soar in all aspects of our lives. Most diets aren’t healthy because they are not balanced, and are not meant to be followed for a lifetime.
(1) Depending upon the type of diet, there may be nutritional deficiencies, or overload body systems, that over time will become a problem.
Let me give you a personal example: My gall bladder was removed about 18 years ago. Even though many people and some doctors say it isn’t necessary, that isn’t the whole story.
Our gall bladder is where bile is stored. (Bile helps your digestive system break down fats.)
So, let me get back to my story. Without a gall bladder, breaking down fats is much much more difficult. I actually take a daily supplement of Ox Bile to help with this. I recently decided to follow the keto diet to support a loved one. What I discovered is that it was making me sick pretty quickly. My body can’t handle the high fat, high protein combination meal after meal, so I had to bow out. It was really really hard on my kidneys and liver!
Just a note, it is hard for any body to follow this eating pattern long term and not put a lot of pressure on kidney and liver function for the long haul.
Also, does the keto diet work because you are putting yourself in ‘ketosis’, or is it working more because you are not eating inflammation causing grains and sugar? I personally think the verdict is still out.
(2) Fad diets: More often than not, these ‘dieters’ are actually shedding mainly inflammation because the dieter is not currently eating the processed, grain, and sugar laden foods or beverages they typically consume.
It is thought that losing 1-2 pounds of fat is about as much as a body can naturally shed in a week. According to the Mayo Clinic,
“Over the long term, it’s smart to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week. Generally to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day, through a lower calorie diet and regular physical activity.”
You may be able to drop pounds more quickly, but if you then finish and return to the same old diet choices that you ate prior to beginning your diet, it would only stand to reason that you would soon return to your previous size.
The problem with the notion of ‘dieting to lose weight’ is that there are often no long term changes made in food choices.. The ensuing yo-yo of losing and then gaining back inflammation is super unhealthy. Our metabolism is the way our body processes food, and dieting can cause this process to be slowed or even stopped. (Metabolism is the chemical reactions in the body’s cells that change food into energy.)
(3) Most diets entail eating someone else’s choices of what is best for you. This ‘micromanaging’ may seem good at first, but actually goes against our internal desire to make choices for ourselves. It goes against our quest for freedom in all areas of our lives.
So, what does work?
The most effective way to make permanent changes for the healthier is to adjust the intake and choices of foods we eat. There are really no safe alternatives, and that is the number one reason why I say that diets aren’t healthy.
